Often specialists, for example, IT-people, consult with their former colleagues, schoolmates, friends, about things that are related to their work. That speeds up work and leads to good results faster. Clearly that sort of phone calls, e-mails, etc. is PRIVATE COMMUNICATION and will not take place, if "the boss" listens in on it or records it. Love is never free. When a friend, schoolmate, former colleague, guy from the company next door phones or comes by to ask for help, to ask for advice, the advice has to be given to him/her, because otherwise the mutual helping will not work out. That too is PRIVATE COMMUNICATION, which will NOT take place, if any of the bosses of any of the companies listens in on those conversations. No Public Relations stunt can make up the loss of reputation that comes from the interference of cooperation between hard-working developers.
For some reason the management of big corporations seems to think that by spying on everyone, they have better overview, what's going on in their kingdom and have a better chance of ruling it to the results that they prefer. If the choice is between solutions, where one of them is inefficient, but under control, and the other one is efficient, far more profitable, but outside of the control of the king, then the corporate kings seem to prefer control to profit. In that context most of the corporate NSA-style spying makes sense.
Given that working in suboptimal conditions, where fast learning and consultation is limited, reduces specialists' ability to do a good job and therefore degrades their skill level, a smart and hard-working person resigns from that kind of job.
Out of my devilish nature, I just can not leave out the observation that many of the truly terrible general managers, some of them even physicists by education, do not seem to be able to generalize the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle to their day-job: measure its flight characteristics and loose it (for sure) or let it fly, let it do its job, without knowing, to what extent and when it does it.
